Knit and purl with Stitchville

Craft holidays are a great way to escape normality, so pick up your needles and get knitting with Stitchville, last stop on the way to handmade heaven.

Pack all your troubles in your old knit bag and smile, smile, smile, because we’ve come across the holiday to end all holidays – knitting with Stitchville in the heart of the leafy Devonshire countryside.
Craft holidays are big business right now – you can even book a make and do cruise! – but we love that you don’t even have to hop on a plane to enjoy a handmade break away.
Stitchville – launched by knitwear designer and pattern maker Gosia Dzik-Holden in early 2011 – is inviting knitters, novice or otherwise, to bring their stash down to Great Torrington in Devon to stay in a fantastic old townhouse (built in 1701!) and learn a few new tricks of the trade.
“It’s not really a terribly busy sort of holiday,” Gosia says. “It’s really an opportunity to put your feet up and be well looked after.”
The focus is on food, relaxation and knitting – although there may be the chance to visit a local Devon alpaca farm, run by a lady who makes beautiful hand-spun alpaca and cashmere yarn – and it doesn’t matter whether you’ve made hundreds of hats and scarves already or have never picked up needles before. Gosia says she’s had complete novices and expert knitters come on one of the holidays.
“The idea is to create a space of relaxation and leisure,” she adds. “It’s not very often that women come across these opportunities to do nothing! Because of the incredible slowdown that people experience, they come for three or four days but it seems like it’s been a week or two.”
There are three dates to choose from for the Great Torrington knitting holiday: the 22nd to the 26th of January, the 28th of January to the 1st of February and the 4th to the 8th of February, all priced at £575.
Let us know if you do go, we’d love to hear about your experiences!
